The Ugandan nation was saddened to learn of the passing of Alice Owenjuye Opondo, the mother of Ofwono Opondo, Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre and prominent government spokesperson. Mrs. Opondo breathed her last at 2:30 A.M. at Mukono General Hospital, as confirmed by her son, Ofwono Opondo, on Monday, April 6th.

In a poignant announcement made by Opondo, he refrained from disclosing the precise cause of his mother’s demise, choosing instead to focus on honoring her memory during this time of grief. As the news reverberated across the country, Ugandans from all walks of life took to social media to express their condolences and offer support to the bereaved family.

Former Vision Group Chief Executive Officer, who shares a professional history with Opondo, conveyed his heartfelt sympathies on social media, stating, “Comrade @OfwonoOpondo heartfelt condolences.” Such messages of solidarity and empathy flooded Opondo’s social media platforms, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration he commands within Ugandan society.

One individual, known as Nats, quoted Opondo’s post and expressed, “Ooh so sad, may her soul rest internal peace. So sorry for the loss big man.” Meanwhile, Eng. Dr. Kenneth Muniina extended his sincere condolences, stating, “Ohh so sorry OOO … my sincere condolences on your loss … MHSRIP.”

The outpouring of support continued as Jude Bwogi reflected, “God has been very good for u sir to have her till this time! We thank God for her life and contribution to this motherland. MHRIP.” Even Balaam Barugahara, the state minister for Youth and Children Affairs, joined the chorus of condolences, commenting, “May her soul rest in Peace,” on Opondo’s social media post.

Marcella Karekye, the special presidential assistant on communication and director of the Government Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC), also offered her heartfelt condolences, stating, “Sincere condolences @OfwonoOpondo. May she rest in eternal peace.”

In the face of loss, the collective compassion and support demonstrated by fellow Ugandans underscore the strength of community and unity during times of sorrow. As Ofwono Opondo and his family navigate through this period of mourning, they find solace in the outpouring of love and solidarity from their compatriots, honoring the life and legacy of Mrs. Alice Owenjuye Opondo.
